This brief survey was a real-time market study to gage the momentum and growth of companies that have a vested interest in in-mold labeling of packaging (IML) and in-mold decoration of durable products (IMD).
The survey was publicized in the IMDA In-Mold Messenger newsletter, on the IMDA website, on LinkedIn and in various industry and trade publications.
It asked only six questions about the IML/IMD business climate for the fourth quarter of 2010.
The results show very healthy actual IML and IMD sales growth for the fourth quarter of 2010 as well as continued anticipated strong growth for the early part of 2011.

Who responded to the survey?
The make up of the respondents was quite representative of the industry. Fifty percent were label printers, 20% suppliers of materials (label films, inks, etc), 15% molders, 9% equipment suppliers and 6% brand owners.
Why do you do IML/IMD?
One third said their customer demands it and another third said that IML and IMD is a market differentiator.
What are the target markets for your products?
The largest percentage, 38%, was packaging. Durable products were 31% and consumer products another 28%.
How much of your business is IML or IMD related?
Forty one percent said that IML or IMD is more than 30% of their business. Another 45% said it is only 10% or less of their sales and 14% said it accounts for 10 to 30% of sales.
How did IML/IMD sales compare to the previous quarter?
Thirty percent said sales were the same as the third quarter but 20% reported an increase in sales of up to 10% and 43% saw increases of over 10%. Only 7% showed a drop in sales for the same period.
How were requests for quotes or proposals for future IML/IMD business?
This is an important question because it relates to the strength of the business recovery. Twenty five percent said requests for quotes were the same as the third quarter, 25% said they increased by up to 10% and 38% said these requests increased by more than 10%. That is 63% reporting new requests for quotes on future business .This show considerable sustained market strength for IML and IMD products.
